Aoshima Jinja Hadaka Mairi is a traditional Shinto ritual held every January at Aoshima Shrine in Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture. This event is based on the legend of Hohihodemi-no-mikoto, who, upon returning from the Sea God's Kingdom, was welcomed by villagers who rushed to meet him without even having time to dress. Today, the event is typically held around the 'Coming of Age Day' holiday. The sight of many men wearing traditional attire and immersing themselves in the seawater to perform 'Misogi' (purification) amidst the cold wind is incredibly powerful, representing a ritual deeply rooted in Japanese spiritual culture.
The origins of this ritual date back to the age of mythology. The core of this event lies in the episode where people welcomed Hohihodemi-no-mi-koto with great enthusiasm, without having time to prepare their clothing. Historically, it was held on the 17th day of the 12th lunar month, and there was a custom of praying through the night. The modern 'Hadaka Mairi' strongly emphasizes the aspect of 'Misogi'—the act of purifying the mind and body by plunging into the sea in the cold wind. It is said that performing this ritual brings the same blessings as visiting a shrine 1,000 times, making it a vital spiritual event for the local community.
The most striking feature is the heroic sight of numerous men in traditional white clothing, happi coats, or fundoshi (loincloths) advancing into the sea. The sight of them marching with white headbands tied tightly, filled with energy and vigor, allows visitors to feel the raw heat of a Japanese festival. To enjoy the viewing, you must prepare for the extremely cold January environment. We strongly recommend bringing heavy coats, heat packs (kairo), gloves, and earmuffs for warmth. Since the wind by the sea can be very strong, clothing with windproof functionality is ideal. If there are participation fees, please prepare cash.
