Located in Misawa City, Aomori Prefecture, the "Aomori Prefectural Misawa Science Museum" is a facility dedicated to the themes of "The Great Sky" and "Flight." It offers a deep dive into the history of aviation, space exploration, and the scientific principles that govern them. Opened in 2003, the museum was designed to nurture scientific curiosity in children, drawing inspiration from the rich history of the Misawa Air Base.
The most striking feature is the overwhelming realism of the aircraft on display. A real YS-11, formerly used by Japan Air Commuter, is exhibited in its original state, allowing visitors to experience the interior structure and space of a real aircraft up close. Outside, at the "Misawa City Ozora Hiroba," a spectacular landscape unfolds with aircraft such as the F-16 and the T-2 in Blue Impulse livery, provided by the U.S. Air Force and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, symbolizing the history of the skies.

Additionally, the 3rd-floor observation deck offers a panoramic view of the vast Misawa Airfield, providing a sense of being at the gateway to the sky.
Don't miss the outdoor "Misawa City Ozora Hiroba." Here, you can see rare fighter jets and trainer aircraft, such as the F-16A, T-33A, and the Blue Impulse-spec T-2, up close. These displays, made possible through cooperation with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and the U.S. Air Force, create a truly world-class aviation landscape.
While the museum is enjoyable year-round, we highly recommend visiting the outdoor "Misawa City Ozora Hiroba" on clear, sunny days. Viewing real fighter jets under a bright blue sky is a truly unforgettable experience. The observation deck is also best visited during the daytime to observe the lively activity of the airfield. Visiting near dusk allows you to enjoy the beautiful sight of the aircraft standing still as the colors of the sky change.
The essence of the museum lies in the "experience." The 2nd-floor Science Zone provides corners where scientific principles can be understood through experiments and play. The environment is designed to foster scientific thinking through activities like the science experiment workshop. While most activities take place indoors, you will be exposed to the weather when moving to the outdoor display area (Ozora Hiroba). Please prepare clothing appropriate for the season. The aircraft on display are precious cultural assets; touching the exhibits or failing to follow instructions is strictly prohibited.
