The Aomori Bay Bridge is a 1,219m long PC cable-stayed bridge located in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture. It was constructed primarily to alleviate traffic congestion for cargo transport at Aomori Port. The name of the bridge was chosen through a public-driven selection process. A standout feature of this bridge is the way the piers and cable arrangements form the letter 'A', representing the first letter of 'Aomori'. This design makes the bridge a vital and iconic element of the Aomori City skyline.
The project was officially launched in 1982, with construction beginning in 1985. It first opened as a temporary two-lane road in July 1992, and the full four-lane service was completed in July 1994. Throughout the design and construction process, great emphasis was placed on the aesthetic appearance, with the total construction cost reaching approximately 27 billion yen. The bridge is highly regarded for both its technical and aesthetic qualities, having received the prestigious Tanaka Award (Works Category) from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers. Additionally, certain sections are equipped with snow-melting functions to manage road surface icing.
The most striking feature is the unique design where the piers and cables mimic the shape of the letter 'A'.
