Shirogane Blue Pond, located in Biei, Kamikawa District, Hokkaido, is a breathtaking scenic spot known for its vibrant blue water. This pond is actually a man-made reservoir formed by a dam constructed as a disaster prevention measure following volcanic activity from Mount Tokachi. The water exhibits a stunning turquoise or emerald green hue, and the vertical, standing dead larch trees create a unique, surreal landscape. The pond was formed in connection with flood control works designed to prevent volcanic mudflow disasters caused by the eruption of Mount Tokachi in December 1988. It is a man-made pond created by the water accumulating behind a concrete block dam built on the main stream of the Biei River. The trees, such as larch and white birch that originally grew in the area, were submerged during this process and remain standing in a dead state, which provides the current iconic scenery. The pond gained international fame after being discovered by professional photographers in 1997, leading to its recognition as a world-class destination through various photo books and media coverage.
The greatest charm of the Blue Pond is the vivid blue color of the water, which is caused by sunlight reacting with the minerals in the water. Colloidal particles in the water scatter light, emphasizing shorter wavelengths and creating the brilliant blue effect. The standing dead trees, appearing to float on the surface, are the most iconic symbol of this location. Because the color and atmosphere change depending on the season, weather, and time of day, every visit offers a fresh and new discovery.
The Blue Pond displays different faces throughout the seasons. From spring to autumn, the blue water creates a beautiful contrast with the lush green surrounding nature. On sunny days, the light reflection is most intense during the daytime, making it the best time to observe the vivid turquoise color. During the winter season (October 24th to April 22nd), the area features special nighttime illuminations.
