Angel Road is a stunning sandbar located in Tonosho Town, Shodoshima, Kagawa Prefecture, that emerges during low tide. This long, narrow path stretching approximately 500 meters is affectionately known as the "Angel's Promenade." Because the path only appears when the tide recedes, it is accessible only during specific windows of time, roughly twice a day. The location offers a breathtaking view of the Seto Inland Sea, characterized by its many islands and serene, sparkling waters.
While originally a site used for activities like clam digging, the area gained immense popularity through word-of-mouth regarding the belief that "couples who hold hands in the middle of the path will be eternally bound together." This has made Angel Road a renowned "Sacred Spot for Lovers" and a premier destination for matchmaking. It is frequently featured in Shodoshima tourism guides and is officially recognized as one of the "88 Views of Shikoku" by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, highlighting its status as a significant natural scenic spot.

The most captivating sight is the white sandy path that reveals itself as the water recedes. Watching the path emerge from the sea is a mystical experience that allows visitors to feel the rhythmic cycles of nature. You can stroll along the sandbar while enjoying the panoramic views of the calm Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding islands. Please note that the path leads toward Oshima Island, which is private property owned by the Kobe YMCA; therefore, visitors are welcome to walk only as far as the approach to the island.
The landscape of Angel Road changes dramatically depending on the tides. The path only appears twice a day during low tide. Therefore, it is crucial to check a "Tide Table" (Shiomi-hyo) before your visit to plan your arrival around the low tide windows. While the area is beautiful in all seasons, understanding the timing of the tides is the absolute key to successfully experiencing this natural phenomenon.
Here, you can experience the unique sensation of walking on a path created by the ocean. Walking hand-in-hand with a partner while making a wish for eternal love is a highlight of the trip. The stroll offers a special moment of tranquility away from daily life. Because the path disappears as the tide rises, the experience of witnessing this fleeting natural architecture is truly one-of-a-kind.
The area around Angel Road is dotted with spots where you can immerse yourself in the culture of Shodoshima. Notable nearby locations include Saiko-ji Temple, one of the 88 temples of Shodoshima, the Ozaki Hokusai Memorial Museum dedicated to the poet, and the charming "Maze Town" (Meiro-no-machi). Combining these visits allows for a much deeper understanding of the history and culture of the island.
Since you will be walking on sand and potentially near water, we recommend wearing comfortable, walkable shoes and clothing that you don't mind getting a little sandy or damp. As the area is a natural scenic site, please respect the environment by taking all trash home with you. For smooth travel, we recommend checking local information regarding nearby parking or transportation in advance.
