Amagoi Falls (Amagoi no Taki) is a breathtaking scenic spot located in Kamiyama Town, Myozai District, Tokushima Prefecture. This site is highly distinguished, having been selected as one of the '100 Best Waterfalls in Japan,' and is also recognized as a significant natural landmark in the region, featured in lists such as 'Shikoku Mizube 88' and 'Tokushima 88 Landscapes.' The most striking feature is the 'Meoto Falls' (Husband and Wife Falls) structure, where two distinct waterfalls stand side by side. On the left, the 'Odaki' (Husband Waterfall) plunges from a height of 27 meters, while on the right, the 'Medaki' (Wife Waterfall) cascades down three tiers from a height of 45 meters. The dynamic interplay of these two falls creates an overwhelming and powerful spectacle of water and stone.
The name 'Amagoi' (meaning 'praying for rain') originates from ancient local rituals. Historically, when the region suffered from severe droughts that threatened crops, local farmers would gather here wearing traditional straw capes (minogasa) to strike bells and drums, performing rituals to pray for rain. This history has deeply etched a sense of reverence for nature and gratitude for water into the landscape. Furthermore, the area has long been a site of spiritual devotion, with shrines dedicated to the 'Ryuo-shin' (Dragon King God), who governs water, and 'Fudo-son,' a deity believed to ward off calamities.
The greatest appeal of Amagoi Falls lies in the contrasting movement of the two falls. The contrast between the three-tiered, dynamic descent of Medaki and the vertical plunge of Odaki offers a stunning display of natural architectural beauty. Along the walking paths leading to the falls, visitors can encounter several other smaller waterfalls that change character with the seasons, such as Uguisu Falls, Fudo Falls, Momiji (Maple) Falls, and Kanon Falls. These serve as beautiful milestones on the journey to the main falls. During the autumn season, the surrounding foliage turns vibrant colors, creating a spectacular contrast against the white, misty spray of the waterfalls.
While Amagoi Falls is beautiful year-round, the best time to visit is during autumn (October to November). During this period, the surrounding mountains are covered in brilliant autumn colors, making the scenery exceptionally colorful and rich. The lush greenery of spring also offers a refreshing and cooling atmosphere. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours. This allows you to fully appreciate the height of the falls, the clarity of the water, and the vivid colors of the surrounding vegetation. Please note that paths may change depending on weather and season, so daytime visits are ideal for safety.
The primary activity here is nature walking and exploration. As you follow the trails toward the falls, you can observe various smaller waterfalls and unique geological formations. For those interested in history, the path toward the higher elevations offers a connection to the legends of Himiko at Takane-yama Higan-ji Temple. Listening to the rhythmic sound of falling water and the ambient sounds of the forest provides a deeply meditative and peaceful experience.
The area around the falls is dotted with spots that allow you to experience the rich nature of Kamiyama Town. For instance, Higan-ji Temple, located at an altitude of 700 meters, offers a touch of historical storytelling. Additionally, the nearby 'Kamiyama Onsen' (Hot Springs) is a perfect place to relax and soak after your walk. Local information sites also highlight other beautiful landscapes in the area, such as the terraced rice fields of Fudono and the stunning autumn leaves of Zuigan-ji Temple.
Access to Amagoi Falls is via walking paths. Because the ground can be damp or slippery, we strongly recommend wearing sturdy, comfortable walking shoes.
