The Akechidaira Observation Deck (Akechidaira Ropeway) is a premier observation spot located in Hosoo-cho, Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. It offers a spectacular view of Lake Chuzenji, Mount Nantai, and the famous Kegon Falls. Visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view from a high altitude by taking the 0.3 km ropeway that connects Akechidaira Station to the Observation Deck Station. While the area once featured a large rest house, it now provides a well-maintained observation space that allows you to appreciate the unique natural topography of Nikko from a high vantage point.
The history of this ropeway dates back to its opening on November 3, 1933, by the Nikko Railway. After a period of suspension in 1943 due to wartime restrictions, operations were resumed by Tobu Railway in 1950. While the area was once connected by streetcars and cable cars, the ropeway remains the primary mode of transport today following road developments. The ropeway also holds international significance, as the Tobu Group has established friendship agreements with entities like the Maokong Gondola in Taiwan, highlighting its role in international tourism networks.

The greatest highlight is the view from the second floor of the Observation Deck Station. From here, you can gaze upon the vast surface of Lake Chuzenji, the silhouette of Mount Nantai, and the nearby Kegon Falls from a high perspective. Additionally, there are spaces where you can observe the remnants of the former cable car tracks, allowing you to feel the history of the area while enjoying the scenery. Even the ropeway cars themselves are a draw, featuring a design inspired by the Tobu Railway's 'Spacia X' train.
Akechidaira Observation Deck offers different scenery depending on the season. From spring to summer, you can enjoy the lush greenery and the deep blue of Lake Chuzenji. In autumn, the view of the surrounding mountains turning vibrant colors is truly spectacular. Please note that during winter, hiking courses near the observation deck may be closed. Crucially, there is a scheduled long-term suspension for renewal works (expected from January 16, 2026, to August 31, 2027). Please check the official website for the latest operational status before visiting.

Beyond the aerial ride on the ropeway, visitors can enjoy walking through the surrounding nature. A hiking course leading toward Chanokidaira is available near the observation deck, perfect for a nature stroll. Near Akechidaira Station, there is a new building equipped with facilities for purchasing beverages and restrooms, allowing you to relax while enjoying the view.
Access to Akechidaira Station is via the Daini Irohazaka road. Please be aware that this road has a one-way restriction (accessible from Nikko Station direction only) when traveling toward Lake Chuzenji. The area is surrounded by iconic Nikko landmarks like Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls, making it easy to combine this visit with other sightseeing routes.
