Akashi Kaikyo Park is a vast national park spanning the Awaji and Kobe areas of Hyogo Prefecture. The Awaji area, in particular, is characterized by its beautiful landscape, developed from the site of Mt. Nada, which was once a sand and gravel extraction site. Situated on high ground with a direct view of the majestic Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, the park offers a dynamic scenery where the sea, sky, and lush greenery blend seamlessly. More than just a recreational facility, it serves as an "Ecomuseum," providing a space for learning and healing where visitors can experience biodiversity and environmental conservation through all five senses.
The history of this park began with its development in the 1990s. Following the decision to start the project in 1993, the development of the Awaji area progressed from 1995. The first phase of the Awaji area opened on March 21, 2002, and has been developed in stages since then. The transformation of a former extraction site into this sprawling, flower-filled green space is a symbol of nature regeneration. Additionally, the Kobe area focuses on the preservation of the 'Satoyama' landscape through the Aina Satoyama Park, maintaining a deep connection to local culture.
The park is dotted with diverse facilities and gardens that keep every visit interesting. Key spots include 'Daichi no Niji' (Rainbow of the Earth), 'Mizu no Iwato' (Water Gate), and the 'Tendan Terrace,' all of which showcase the beauty of natural topography and flora. As the park is quite large, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes (sneakers are best) and bringing a hat and sunscreen, as there are many open areas with little shade. Regarding payments, while many facilities accept cash, credit cards, or IC cards, it is good to have cash ready for smaller vendors. While some signage is available in English, most is in Japanese, so using a translation app is helpful. No prior reservation is needed for general entry, though event participation may require it. To protect the environment, please take your trash home and respect the plants and local rules.
