Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Bridge World is a facility located in Tarumi-ku, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, dedicated to exploring the technology and history of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. It is much more than a simple viewpoint; it is a center for engineering enthusiasts to deeply understand bridge structures and construction history. Within the bridge structure on the Kobe side lies the 'Maiko Marine Promenade.' Visitors can take an elevator up to 47 meters above sea level. From there, you can walk approximately 150 meters toward the sea, experiencing a thrilling sensation through sections with transparent floors that allow you to look directly down at the ocean below.
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is a representative suspension bridge of Japan, which began operations in 1998. During its construction, the bridge faced the challenge of the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. Although the earthquake caused a displacement in the ground that lengthened the bridge by about one meter, construction successfully continued. This historic event serves as a testament to the incredible resilience and advanced engineering of the bridge. Also known by its nickname 'Pearl Bridge,' it is a beloved symbol of beautiful night scenery in the region.
The greatest draw is the opportunity to feel the scale of the bridge through close-up exhibits and views. The Bridge Science Museum features a 1/100 scale model used in wind tunnel testing and various displays regarding bridge technology. Furthermore, the special 'Bridge World' events, held for a limited number of participants during specific periods, allow visitors to access the maintenance walkways and the tops of the main towers—areas usually strictly off-limits. This is a rare and precious experience that lets you feel the sheer scale of a massive structure at the pinnacle of engineering.
The illumination of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge changes colors depending on the season and time. On weekdays, the colors are set to green in spring, blue in summer, red in autumn, and yellow in winter. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, the lights remain on from sunset until midnight. Additionally, at every full hour and half-hour, special light patterns inspired by rainbow colors or birthstones are displayed. You can enjoy the dynamic form of the bridge alongside these beautiful nocturnal displays.
At the facility, you can learn about the scientific principles behind the bridge. The Science Museum sometimes even sells samples of the actual wire strands used in the cables, allowing you to grasp the immense strength required to support such a giant suspension bridge. Walking along the Maiko Marine Promenade provides the sensation of walking over the sea, and the view through the transparent floor is a unique experience found only here.
The surrounding area offers magnificent views of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. From the Kobe side, it is possible to take stunning photographs with the massive scale of the bridge as a backdrop.
