Ajisai Park is a vast, beautiful park spanning approximately 6.9 hectares in Miyakonojo City, Miyazaki Prefecture. True to its name, the park is famous for its breathtaking scenery where 28,000 hydrangeas of 84 different varieties blanket the slopes, making it a beloved seasonal landmark in early summer. The most spectacular sight occurs from early to mid-June, when the vibrant colors of the hydrangeas are in full bloom. Beyond being a botanical paradise, the park is a site of historical significance, incorporating the ruins of Matsuo Castle, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical depth.
The park encompasses the historical site of the former Matsuo Castle. At the top of the hill, a 15-meter-high observatory designed in the shape of a castle structure serves as a landmark, allowing visitors to feel the historical essence of the area. Historically, this location served as a strategic point overlooking the Miyakonojo Basin. Today, the area is meticulously maintained to promote both nature conservation and tourism, ensuring visitors can enjoy the changing seasonal landscapes year-round.

The absolute highlight is the "carpet of hydrangeas" that blooms in early summer. The sight of diverse hydrangea varieties covering the hillsides is truly awe-inspiring and provides perfect opportunities for photography. Additionally, from the Matsuo Castle ruins observatory located at an altitude of approximately 210 meters, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the majestic Kirishima mountain range and the sprawling Miyakonojo Basin below. The park offers different charms depending on the season, featuring cherry blossoms in spring, irises in early summer, and vibrant autumn foliage in the fall.
The best time to visit is from early to mid-June. During this window, the park is completely filled with colorful hydrangeas. While hydrangeas are the star, you can also enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms in spring, irises in early summer, and autumn leaves in the fall. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to see the colors clearly and enjoy the panoramic view from the observatory. However, visiting at dusk offers a magical atmosphere as the colors of the sky blend with the floral hues.

During the hydrangea blooming season, a small shop operates within the park. Here, you can enjoy local specialties and the visually stunning, limited-time "Hydrangea Desserts." Taking a break with soft-serve ice cream, a refreshing drink, or a packed lunch while surrounded by nature allows for a truly relaxing experience. It is a wonderful way to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with nature.
Ajisai Park is conveniently located about a 5-minute drive from JR Yamanouchi Station, making it an easy destination for travelers. The surrounding area of Miyakonojo City is rich in nature, making it an excellent destination for driving or touring. It is also a great stop to include in a larger sightseeing itinerary around Miyazaki Prefecture.

Because the park features sloping terrain and walking paths, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please be careful, as the ground can be damp, especially during the hydrangea season. For purchases at the shop, please prepare cash as it is the most reliable way to pay. Since English-language support may be limited, using a translation app is recommended. To preserve the beautiful landscape, please refrain from touching the plants and ensure you take all trash home with you.
