Aizu Kogen Takatsue Ski Resort is one of the largest and most significant ski resorts in the Tohoku region, located in the Takatsuehara district of Minamiaizu, Fukushima Prefecture. Its most striking feature is its vertical layout; the elevation difference between the summit and the base is approximately 700 meters, creating a vast area with diverse terrain. From the summit at 1,650 meters, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, which include several of Japan's top 100 mountains. The resort is also highly regarded for its exceptional snow quality, making it a premier destination for those seeking high-quality powder snow.
The history of this area is rooted in the post-war development era. Originally developed as a land for dairy farming, the area transitioned into a recreational space when the Tategawa Village Ski Resort opened in 1980. With the involvement of capital from entities like Tobu Railway, the area saw significant expansion in lift-access and hotel facilities, evolving into a large-scale resort. Historically, it also had a strong identity as a 'pension village' through collaboration with Tobu Resort Development. Today, the resort is managed by Minami Aizu Co., Ltd., a local third-sector company, serving as a vital hub for regional tourism.
The highlight of the slopes is undoubtedly the long-distance cruising enabled by the significant elevation drop. Using lifts such as the Sky Road to reach the higher elevations allows skiers to experience the thrill of descending through vast, open snowfields—a unique charm of this resort. In winter, you may also witness beautiful frost-covered trees (ice trees) near the summit. On clear days, the landscape is dominated by the majestic peaks of Mt. Hiizugatake and Mt. Aizu Komagatake. The diverse course layout accommodates everyone from beginners to advanced skiers and snowboarders.
The best season to visit is the winter period from December to March. January and February are particularly attractive for skiers and snowboarders as the snow quality stabilizes, offering the best powder snow. If you wish to enjoy the changing seasons, the surrounding area is also beautiful from late August to early September, when buckwheat (soba) fields bloom with beautiful flowers, offering a completely different, serene highland landscape compared to the winter scenery.
Beyond skiing and snowboarding, the resort's scale is perfect for long-distance cruising. The area also features the Aizu Kogen Takatsue Country Club for seasonal sports. At the base of the mountain, you can soothe your muscles at the 'Shirakaba-no-yu' hot spring facility. For those traveling from Tokyo, the route via Tobu Railway's limited express trains makes the journey itself part of the seasonal adventure.
The area around the base of the ski resort is well-equipped with accommodation, including the Aizu Astoria Hotel, Aizu Kogen Hotel, and numerous pensions and guest houses, making it ideal for long-term stays. You can also find local 'Michi-no-Eki' roadside stations and shops selling local specialties, perfect for driving tours. Depending on the season, you can enjoy hiking trails or stroll through the scenic buckwheat fields.
For winter visits, thorough cold-weather protection is essential. You will need high-quality ski or snowboard wear and several layers to stay warm even when not skiing. Please observe all safety rules and etiquette on the slopes. While many facilities accept credit cards and transit IC cards, some smaller local shops may only accept cash, so it is highly recommended to carry Japanese Yen. While English signage and support are available at major facilities, preparing in advance will ensure a smoother experience. For accessibility, wheelchair-accessible toilets are available.
