Aizu Kogen Takahata Ski Resort (also known as Kita Nikko Takahata Ski Resort) is located in Minamiaizu Town, Fukushima Prefecture, a region blessed with abundant natural beauty and heavy snowfall. The resort's location, surrounded by mountains reaching 2,000m in altitude, offers breathtaking views of Mount Bandai and the Nasu mountain range on clear days. The facility features 10 courses and 5 lifts. While it was once primarily a ski-focused resort, it is now fully optimized for both skiing and snowboarding. The environment is perfectly suited for all skill levels, offering wide-open spaces for beginners and more technical, challenging slopes for experts.
The resort opened in 1989 as a village-operated ski area in Inami Village, originally featuring 8 courses and 4 lifts. It underwent expansion in 1991 with additional lifts and courses to accommodate growing popularity. Following municipal mergers, the resort is currently managed by DMC Aizu Co., Ltd. (formerly Mac Earth Resort Fukushima) under a designated manager system. As a resort deeply rooted in the local community, it has been a cornerstone of winter leisure in the Aizu region for many years.
The ski area is divided into four distinct zones, each offering a unique experience. The Black Area is the main hub, characterized by wide, expansive slopes ideal for practicing carving turns or fundamental skills for beginners. The Blue Area features the 'Blue Highway,' a wide, gentle slope that curves outward, offering spectacular panoramic views. The Red Area is designed for intermediate skiers, featuring mogul courses to help sharpen technical skills. Finally, the Orange Area includes some uncompacted snow sections, providing a more varied and adventurous riding experience. Visitors can enjoy a diverse range of snow-based activities by navigating through these different areas via the lifts.
The best time to visit is from December to March, when the snow accumulation is highest and the snow quality becomes most stable. January and February are particularly recommended for those seeking the high-quality powder snow that this heavy snowfall region is famous for. During the bright daylight hours, the combination of the sun and the surrounding mountain scenery (Mount Bandai and the Nasu range) creates a majestic atmosphere. Depending on the time of day and weather conditions, the character of the slopes changes, offering a fresh experience every time you visit.
Beyond standard skiing and snowboarding, the resort offers a variety of settings suitable for families and friends. Beginners often start their journey in the Black Area, which is easily visible from the center house. Advanced riders can challenge themselves with mogul training or high-speed carving on the larger slopes. Engaging in activities surrounded by high mountains provides a special, rejuvenating experience away from daily life.
There are numerous local guest houses (minshuku) located near the resort, providing cozy accommodation for visitors. After a day on the slopes, many guests enjoy relaxing in nearby hot springs, such as the Azuki Onsen, to soothe their muscles. The wider Aizu region is also rich in cultural-historical sites, allowing travelers to enjoy a complete winter vacation that combines sports with local sightseeing.
As this is an outdoor winter activity, thorough cold-weather preparation is essential. Please bring high-quality thermal wear, gloves, goggles, and a helmet. Regarding payments, please note that the acceptance of cash versus credit cards may vary depending on the specific facility or shop. It is highly recommended to check the latest operating hours and lift status before your visit, as schedules may change based on weather or seasonal adjustments. Note that the resort is typically closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays, though it remains open on public holidays.
