Adventure World is a massive, integrated theme park located in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, combining a zoo, an aquarium, and an amusement park. Built around the theme of "Interaction between Humans, Animals, and Nature," the park is home to approximately 1,600 animals across 120 different species, spanning land, sea, and sky. It is an experiential amusement facility where visitors can not only observe animal behaviors up close but also truly feel the profound beauty of life.
The park originally opened in 1983 as "Nanki Shirahama World Safari" before being renamed to "Adventure World." Over many years, the facility has dedicated itself to the breeding, exhibition, and research of animals. It is particularly renowned worldwide for its expertise in the breeding and display of Giant Pandas. Beyond being a simple leisure facility, it serves as a place to deepen one's understanding of life through direct communication and observation of animals.

The park features a diverse range of exhibition areas. One of the most iconic attractions is the performance by marine mammals, including dolphins, sea lions, and whales. In the Safari Area, visitors can experience the thrill of observing free-roaming animals from the safety of the moving "Kenya" vehicle. Additionally, you can enjoy various themed areas such as the Panda exhibition area, as well as zones featuring penguins, capybaras, and various bird species, allowing for a rich variety of animal encounters.
The charm of the park changes with the seasons. During peak periods like Golden Week or summer vacations, the park often holds special evening operations. During these night-time events, you can witness the "Night LIVE Adventure," where high-impact shows featuring dolphins and sea lions are presented with spectacular light and sound effects. The best seasons, such as spring and summer, also host various seasonal events tailored to the time of year.
A defining characteristic of Adventure World is the close proximity to the animals. In the "Interaction Plaza," you can experience close-up encounters with animals like capybaras (some interactions may require an additional fee). The dolphin and sea lion shows are incredibly popular programs, allowing visitors to see the expressive movements and communication of the animals and their trainers. From safari tours to amusement park rides, a full day of diverse entertainment awaits.
The Shirama area, where Adventure World is located, is rich in tourism resources. Nearby, you can find the beautiful coastlines of Nanki Shirahama and numerous hot spring (onsen) facilities. The area around Tanabe Station and the "Tore Tore Market" are also popular, making it a common route for visitors to enjoy fresh local seafood after their adventure at the park.
Since the park covers a vast area, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. It is also important to prepare for the weather and season. For a smoother experience, it is best to purchase tickets in advance via the official website. Please note that the resale of tickets is strictly prohibited; tickets purchased through unauthorized channels will not be honored, so please ensure you use official routes.
