The Adatara Keikoku Okudake Nature Trail is a beautifully maintained natural path along the Karakawa River, a tributary of the Harase River originating from the majestic Mt. Adatara in Fukushima Prefecture. While the entire scenic area spans approximately 5 km, a specific 1 km section is officially designated and maintained as a national nature trail. This area has long been a beloved destination for locals and mountaineers alike, offering a way to feel close to the raw beauty of nature through easy hiking and leisurely strolls.
The region is blessed with a rich water system originating from Mt. Adatara, creating a landscape that has been cherished by local communities and climbers for generations. The trail was designed to allow people to safely experience and touch the natural environment while strictly maintaining the preservation of the landscape. Today, the area serves a dual purpose as a nature conservation park and an educational site for learning about the local ecosystem.

The trail features several iconic landmarks. The most notable are Uodome Falls (Uodome-daki), Heikatsusho, and Momiji Falls (Momiji-daki). If you are lucky, you may observe the stunning emerald green waters of the plunge pool near Uodome Falls. The sight of these waterfalls, the unique rock formations, and the flowing water are the primary reasons visitors flock to this path. The course is designed to be completed in about one hour, making it an efficient and easy way to experience the valley's splendor.
The trail displays a different face in every season. It is particularly famous during the autumn season when the surrounding foliage turns vibrant shades of red and gold, making the valley scenery even more dramatic. While the vegetation and scenery change beautifully throughout the year, we recommend checking local weather and seasonal updates before your visit, as the natural environment can change rapidly.

The primary activities are nature walks and light hiking. Because the trail is equipped with wooden decks and railings, you can enjoy the environment safely without needing professional mountaineering gear. This 1-hour walking experience allows you to observe the intricate details of the waterfalls and river up close. As this is a protected area, the focus is on quiet observation and appreciation of the natural landscape.
The area around the trail is closely linked to Mt. Adatara. You will find various climbing routes for the mountain, as well as facilities and mountain huts used by serious hikers. Please note that access to certain areas may be restricted depending on the current environmental conditions or weather, so checking ahead is highly recommended.
