Abe Monju-in is a historic temple located in Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture, with a history dating back to the year 645 (Taika 1). The main deity of the temple is Monju Bosatsu, the symbol of wisdom, depicted in the form known as 'Tokai Monju.' A particularly significant treasure is the National Treasure Monju Bosatsu statue, attributed to the renowned Kamakura-period sculptor Kaikei. This statue is a vital masterpiece of Japanese Buddhist art. For centuries, the temple has served as a center for prayer and spiritual contemplation, attracting many devoted visitors.
The temple's predecessor was Sugyo-ji, and it has a long history as a sub-temple of Todai-ji. Records indicate that the main Monju Bosatsu statue was created around 1203 (the Kenin era), coinciding with the reconstruction period of Todai-ji. The statue features Monju Bosatsu riding a lion, surrounded by four attendant deities. The temple is also deeply connected to Japanese folklore and legends, including associations with the famous onmyoji Abe no Seimei. The temple grounds are dotted with various structures such as the Hondo (Main Hall), Hakusan-do, and Kinkaku Ukemido, each possessing its own historical value.
