Wakasahiko Shrine is a historic shrine located in Fukui Prefecture, known as the Ichinomiya (first shrine) of the ancient Wakasa Province. The shrine hosts two major annual rituals called 'Reisai'. The first is the 'Shimosha Reisai', held on March 10 at Wakasa Hime Shrine (Shimosha). The second is the 'Kami no Sha Reisai', held on October 10 at the Kami no Sha.
The deity of the Shimosha is 'Toyotama-hime no Mikoto' (Wakasahime Okami), and the ritual is rooted in the history of her arrival in the village of Oshiki on February 10, 721. These ceremonies are vital rituals to pass down regional traditions to the next generation, conducted in a solemn and dignified atmosphere.
The greatest highlight is witnessing the traditional Shinto rituals performed by priests and officials following strict protocols. Observing the ceremonies at the main hall (Honden) and worship hall (Haiden) offers a rare opportunity to touch the core of Japanese spiritual culture. The beauty of the historic wooden architecture combined with the serene atmosphere is deeply moving.
Currently, restoration work is underway for the main shrine roof to preserve this historical architecture for centuries to come. By observing these rituals, you can directly experience the traditional forms of Japanese faith.
