During the Nara period, these internationally influenced artworks adorned great temples and set the standard for Japanese Buddhist art for centuries. This exhibition is a groundbreaking attempt to trace the history of these sacred paintings alongside a curated selection of exquisite Buddhist paintings and sculptures.
Of particular note is the "homecoming" of precious Buddhist paintings from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This international collaboration, realized after 20 years of planning, brings together the world-class collections of both the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Nara National Museum. Visitors will also have the chance to experience the profound history through masterpieces that once graced the interior of the historic Uchiyama Eiju-ji Temple.
