Takasaki Matsuri is a major summer festival held on the last Saturday and Sunday of late August in the central area of Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture. Its history dates back to the Edo period, originating from the festivities of Yorimasa Shrine, which was patronized by the Okochi family. Over time, the festival has evolved into a symbol of Takasaki, where local citizens take center stage. With an estimated attendance of approximately 700,000 people, it is one of the most significant events in the Northern Kanto region.
The festival features a large-scale fireworks display held on the night of the first day. The 15,000 fireworks that illuminate the sky near Wada Bridge over the Kara River offer a breathtaking spectacle. You can also witness the traditional parade of decorative floats (dashi) and the energetic movement of portable shrines (mikoshi). Additionally, the streets come alive with various stage performances, including Wadaiko drumming, Raimei (thunderous drumming), Takasaki Awa Odori dance, and creative Daruma-themed parades, allowing you to experience the local culture deeply.
