The Taiji Town Fireworks Festival and Taijiura Isana Matsuri is a major Obon event held annually on August 14th in Taiji Town, Wakayama Prefecture. Since 1987, this event has been held to preserve the history and culture of 'Taiji, the Town of Whaling' and to promote the local community.
The festivities begin in the evening at the fishing port with the 'Taijiura Isana Matsuri,' followed by the 'Taiji Town Fireworks Festival' at night. It is a special celebration where traditional rituals and vibrant summer fireworks blend seamlessly.
The biggest highlight is the 'Taijiura Isana Matsuri,' which recreates traditional whaling culture. Using a massive 9-meter FRP whale model and traditional boats (Sekobune), the ritual demonstrates the historical 'net-and-harpoon' whaling method once practiced in Taijiura. This powerful spectacle is a precious moment symbolizing the region's history.
Following the ritual, the 'Taiji Town Fireworks Festival' begins around 8:00 PM. The fireworks, launched after the whale dance, brilliantly illuminate the seaside night sky. After the fireworks, the festivities continue with Bon Odori dancing at the Fishery Cooperative Plaza, allowing visitors to feel the local energy.
