Sumiyoshi Shrine Annual Festival

Event Overview

The Sumiyoshi Shrine Annual Festival is a traditional ritual held from July 14 to 16 at Sumiyoshi Shrine, the guardian of Otaru. This event prays for peace and prosperity through powerful Mikoshi (portable shrine) processions, sacred Bugaku dances, and a lively atmosphere. You can witness precious cultural heritages like the 'Hyakkan Mikoshi' and 'Daidai Kagura', which represent the lineage of Hokkaido's traditional performing arts.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The main attraction is the Mikoshi procession. There are two styles: a vehicle-based parade through the city and a traditional foot procession around the shrine, filling the streets with energy. At the shrine grounds, you can watch sacred Bugaku dances such as 'Karyobin' and 'Kocho', or the 'Daidai Kagura' to experience Japan's traditional performing arts. During the festival, about 200 stalls line the streets, offering local delicacies like the famous 'Otaru Ankake Yakisoba'.

July 15

• *08:00**: 'Hon-sai' (Main Festival) begins
• *09:00**: Mikoshi Go-ko Departure (Main vehicle-based parade)
• *17:00**: Mikoshi arrival at Temiya
• *19:00**: Hyakkan Mikoshi Procession (Foot procession around the shrine)
• *21:30**: Shrine Entrance/Exit (Includes performance by Otaru Taiko group 'Kokyo')

July 16

• *08:30**: Mikoshi Departure (From Temiya/Inai area)
• *15:30**: Gathering of five Mikoshi at Tanaka Shuzo Kikkou-kura
• *16:30**: Arrival at Shrine and 'Gengo-sai' ceremony
• *After 17:00**: Fuku-mochi Maki (Lucky rice cake tossing)
