The Soji Suishin Festival is a deeply evocative traditional event held to honor Soji Water, one of Japan's celebrated '100 Best Waters.' On this summer night, the historic Honmachi district and the area surrounding the Kodara River are transformed into a mystical space through special illuminations. Rather than a loud or boisterous festival, this event is designed to offer a quiet, beautiful experience where visitors can appreciate Japanese cultural aesthetics, gratitude for nature, and a sense of literary elegance.
The main highlight is the 'Light and Water' spectacle. First, the stone-paved paths leading to the Soji Water site are adorned with numerous Andon (traditional paper lanterns), casting a warm, nostalgic glow that makes you feel as if you have traveled back in time. Additionally, the Kodara River features 'Water Fireworks'—a unique display where the light reflects beautifully off the water's surface, creating a seamless harmony between the river and the sky.
For a deeper cultural immersion, visitors can experience the 'Ryofu Chakai' (Cool Breeze Tea Ceremony) and 'Renku' (collaborative linked verse poetry). These programs allow you to touch the spirit of Japanese tradition through the art of tea and poetry, offering a sophisticated way to experience a Japanese summer night away from the typical festival crowds.
This event will be held on August 20, 2026. The main festivities take place during the late evening hours.
As it is a night event, it is the perfect way to conclude your day or create a special summer memory under the moonlight.
The venue covers the Honmachi area and the surroundings of the Kodara River in Kitakyushu. The setting includes the scenic stone-paved slopes leading to the spring and the riverside.
We recommend using public transportation. Since the event takes place at night, please follow the light of the lanterns and streetlights to navigate the area. As there are stone-paved slopes, wearing comfortable walking shoes is highly recommended.
The Soji Suishin Festival prioritates 'atmosphere' and 'mood' over flashy entertainment. It is best enjoyed by walking slowly and taking in the scenery. Bring a camera or smartphone to capture the beautiful lantern-lit paths and the reflections of the fireworks on the river. If you are interested in the cultural programs like the tea ceremony or poetry sessions, we suggest observing the local atmosphere to understand how to participate naturally.
