Shudan Yamakasa Performance

5 min di lettura

Event Overview

The Shudan Yamakasa is a special program of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa, established in 1962 at the request of Fukuoka City. Set against the backdrop of Meiji-dori, you can witness the dynamic movement of the elaborately decorated Yamakasa floats. The 'stage' spans approximately 1.3 km from the Gofukumachi intersection to Tenjin (Fukuoka City Hall), allowing spectators to enjoy the power of the floats during both the outbound and return journeys.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The main highlight is the rhythmic movement of the Yamakasa floats along Meiji-dori. A unique feature of this day is the 'Daiagari'—special guests who stand atop the floats to cheer on the carriers and the pole-handlers. The sight of the heavy floats moving powerfully to traditional chants is truly breathtaking. Because the route is a loop, you can enjoy the dynamic energy of the parade twice: once on the way out and once on the way back.

Schedule

The Shudan Yamakasa takes place on July 13.

  • *Start Time**: 15:30~

Venue & Access

The event takes place in the area around Meiji-dori in Chuo-ku, Fukuoka.

  • *Stage Area**: Between Gofukumachi Intersection and Tenjin (Fukuoka City Hall) (approx. 1.3 km)
  • *Access**: Within walking distance from Tenjin Station or Nakasu-Kawabata Station on the Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line. We highly recommend using public transportation as the area will be extremely crowded.

Tips for Visitors

This event brings an incredible heat and energy to the city as it builds toward the climax of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa. Watching a modern main street like Meiji-dori transform into a traditional festival stage is a unique experience where the everyday meets the extraordinary. Be sure to watch the floats from both directions to see their different expressions.

What to Bring & Etiquette

Since the viewing takes place outdoors on the street, comfortable clothing is recommended. It is also wise to bring water and sun protection to stay hydrated and cool in case of heat or crowds. Please check the official website for detailed rules and regulations.
