Event Overview

The Jotokaku Museum (within Shokoku-ji Temple) presents the second phase of its 40th Anniversary Special Exhibition, "Kyoto of Emperor Go-Mizuno." This exhibition focuses on the profound relationship between Shokoku-ji, founded by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu during the Muromachi period, and Emperor Go-Mizuno, a leader of early modern culture. Emperor Go-Mizuno became a monk under a master of Shokoku-ji and was responsible for the reconstruction of many temple structures. Due to this historical background, Shokoku-ji holds many precious artifacts. This exhibition showcases a collection of extremely rare temple treasures that convey the magnificent culture of 17th-century Kyoto.

The greatest charm of this exhibition lies in the precious items that symbolize the history of Emperor Go-Mizuno, Zen, and Shokoku-ji. The exhibition is divided into several sections to convey a sense of historical depth. A major highlight is the display of Important Cultural Properties. Notable items include the "Aka Raku Tea Bowl" related to Hon'ami Koetsu and the "Colored E-Ryutagawa Translucent Bowl" by Ogata Kenzan, representing the pinnacle of tea ceremony culture. Visitors can also enjoy Zen calligraphy, items reflecting the history of the Imperial family's mortuary temple, and beautiful folding screens depicting the changing seasons, offering a rich visual experience of how aristocratic society and Zen culture once merged.

• *From Kyoto Municipal Subway "Imadegawa Station":** Approx. 8-minute walk from Exit 3.
• *From Hankyu Railway "Karasuma Station":** Transfer to Kyoto Subway and get off at "Imadegawa Station," then walk approx. 8 minutes.
• *From Keihan Railway "Demachiyanagi Station":** Approx. 20-minute walk, or use a city bus.
• *By City Bus:** 6-minute walk from "Doshisha-mae" stop, or 8-minute walk from "Karasuma Imadegawa" stop.
