Every year on July 28th, the annual festival of Shiobara Onsen Kawasaki Daishi Yakuyoke Fudo is held in Nasushiobara, Tochigi Prefecture. This ritualistic event follows a sacred path starting from the Shiobara Onsen area, moving to the mid-slope of Mt. Fuji, and concluding at the sacred summit.
The ceremony begins with the 'Oneri' (procession) through the Shiobara Onsen village, followed by the 'Shitai Daimaku' (a rigorous fire ritual) at the mid-slope of Mt. Fuji. The event reaches its climax with the final grand Goma fire ritual performed before the Yakuyoke Fudo deity at the mountain's summit.
The most striking feature of this festival is the movement through different elevations. The sight of the procession through the hot spring village and the powerful fire rituals performed amidst the natural landscape of Mt. Fuji offer a unique spiritual experience.
