The Shakyo (Sutra Copying) ceremony will be held at Fukuchizan Shuzenji Temple in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Shuzenji is the birthplace of Shuzenji Onsen and was founded by Kobo Daishi in 807 (the early Heian period). The temple has a storied history, having been patronized by the Hojo clan during the Kamakura period. In this event, participants will practice Shakyo—the act of copying Buddhist scriptures—within the serene and sacred environment of the temple.
The main activity is the practice of Shakyo, where you will carefully transcribe Buddhist scriptures using a brush or brush pen. Shuzenji also features the 'Zuihō-kura' treasure house, which houses historical items such as the golden Dokko-sho (ritual implement) that Kobo Daishi is said to have used to bring forth the hot springs, and the Song-dynasty version of the Prajnaparamita Sutra donated by Hojo Masako. You can connect deeply with Japanese traditional culture through the meditative act of writing amidst the temple's stunning natural surroundings and traditional architecture.
