Roha Otsesshin is a sacred and special Zen ritual held annually at Iyama Hofukuji in Okayama Prefecture. This event is designed for deep spiritual cultivation through the traditions of Zen. It features Zazen (seated meditation) performed in the profound silence of the night, followed by traditional 'Charei'—the ritual of serving warm meals like Udon and Amazake (sweet rice porridge). It is a rare opportunity to disconnect from the noise of daily life and reconnect with your inner self.
The true essence of this event lies in the contrast between the intense focus of night-time Zazen and the warmth of the subsequent meal service. Meditating in the deep stillness of the night allows for a level of concentration rarely found in modern life. Following the meditation, the 'Udon Charei' and 'Amazake Charei' provide a comforting physical warmth that complements the spiritual experience, allowing you to feel the hospitality and warmth of Zen teachings. You will experience the profound depth of Japanese Zen culture within a historic temple setting.
The event takes place on December 12th. The schedule is as follows:
The venue is Iyama Hofukuji, located in Okayama Prefecture. It is an ideal setting for Zen practice, surrounded by historic architecture and a tranquil environment. Access is via public transportation or car; we recommend checking the temple's location and local road conditions in advance to ensure a smooth journey.
Unlike regular meditation sessions, this is a special overnight program. Because it takes place at night, preparation is essential. Specifically, to enjoy the meal services (Udon or Amazake), prior registration may be required. Please confirm the registration method (such as via telephone) in advance to ensure your participation.
As this is a long event held at night, please prepare thoroughly for the cold. We highly recommend wearing warm clothing, as it is easy to feel the chill during meditation and meal service. As this is a sacred temple event, please maintain a quiet demeanor and act with respect. Please check the official website for detailed reservation instructions and any specific items to bring.
