Event Overview

Otaru Ushio Matsuri is a historic summer tradition in Otaru, Hokkaido. The festival originated from the 'Minato Otaru Commerce and Tourism Festival' to promote local commerce and tourism following the success of the 1958 Hokkaido Expo. It has evolved by merging various traditions like the 'Port Festival' and 'Competitive Fireworks Display.' It is a vibrant event where locals and tourists unite to celebrate Otaru's history as a port town.

Highlights and How to Enjoy

The highlight of Otaru Ushio Matsuri is the 'Music Fireworks,' a spectacular show of approximately 5,000 shots synchronized with music. The paid viewing areas offer an unparalleled view of the fireworks reflecting on the sea. Throughout the festival, the entire city of Otaru comes alive with local culture and tradition. The paid areas provide sufficient space and an excellent environment to enjoy the seaside scenery alongside the fireworks.

Schedule

The 2026 festival is scheduled for 3 days, from July 24, 2026, to July 26, 2026. Based on previous patterns (such as 2025), fireworks typically occur around 20:00–20:30. Please check the official website closer to the date for the detailed 2026 program. If you plan to use the paid viewing area, please check the opening and closing times in advance.

Venue and Access

The main event takes place in the Otaru city and surrounding port areas. The paid viewing area is located near Otaru-shi Minato-cho 3-ban. Since the venue is located near the sea, the event is held against a beautiful coastal backdrop. Please check local announcements regarding traffic regulations and congestion during the event period.

Participation Tips

To enjoy the festival comfortably, please note that the paid viewing area uses a free-seating system. While approximately 1 square meter of space is allocated per person, you must bring your own mats or chairs. As the venue is near the water, security personnel will be stationed near the quay for safety. Please follow all rules, such as not approaching the sea too closely and disposing of trash properly.

  • Payment: Tickets for the paid viewing area can be purchased in advance via websites (such as Ticket Pia) or other specified digital methods. Please check details regarding on-site payments.
