Event Overview

Mizudome-no-mai is a traditional ritual held every year on the second Sunday of July at Gonsho-ji, a Jodo Shinshu Honganji sect temple located in Ota, Tokyo. Its origins date back approximately 700 years to the era of Emperor Go-Daigo. Historically, the ritual was established as a prayer to stop excessive rain and droughts, using the form of a dragon god. Today, it is recognized as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Tokyo, serving as a precious way to express gratitude to ancestors and nature.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The highlight of Mizudome-no-mai is the dynamic performance rooted in deep historical significance. The ritual consists of two main parts.

First, the 'Michiyuki' procession begins near Omori Higashi Junior High School, moving about 150 meters toward the temple. The sight of a massive dragon made of straw leading the way, accompanied by the powerful sounds of conch shells and the energetic splashing of water, is truly spectacular. After the procession, the ceremony moves to the temple stage for the main 'Mizudome-no-mai' dance.

On stage, three lions—a female lion with a red mask, a young black lion, and a male lion—perform to the rhythm of flutes and drums. The 'Female Lion Hiding Dance' is considered the most exquisite part of the performance, a beautiful dance that moves the heart beyond words. It is a wonderful opportunity to feel the intensity of a traditional Japanese festival up close.

• *Keikyu Line**: Approximately an 8-minute walk from 'Omorimachi Station'.
• *JR Keihin-Tohoku Line**: Take the Keikyu Bus toward 'Morigasaki' or 'Haneda Airport' from the East Exit of 'Omori Station'. Get off at the 'Omori Higashi Junior High School' bus stop, then walk for about 5 minutes.
