The Mikawa Isshiki Lantern Festival is a traditional event held at Suwa Shrine in Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture, boasting over 450 years of history. Originating in the early Edo period as a ritual to ward off evil spirits from the sea, the festival has evolved into a magnificent tradition of displaying massive paper lanterns. It is recognized as a significant cultural asset in Aichi Prefecture.
The main attraction is the overwhelming scale of the 'Giant Lanterns.' Twelve massive lanterns, reaching 10 meters in height and 5.6 meters in diameter, are displayed. These lanterns feature intricate depictions of Japanese mythology and historical scenes. As night falls, the light from the internal candles illuminates the bamboo frames and paper, creating a mystical glow. The flickering light amidst the quiet night offers a deeply spiritual and enchanting experience.
The festival is scheduled for August 26, 2026. The most spectacular moment occurs after 7:00 PM when the lanterns are fully lit. We recommend arriving in the evening to witness the magical transformation of the night sky.
