Carnivorous Plants Exhibition: Discover the World of Venus Flytraps and Pitcher Plants

Event Overview

Hosted by the Makino Botanical Garden—a place honoring the achievements of the botanist Dr. Tomitaro Makino—this special summer event focuses on the 'Carnivorous Plant Exhibition.' The exhibition highlights the incredible survival strategies of plants that live in nutrient-poor environments by setting 'traps' to capture insects for nourishment.

You will see a diverse collection of plants with various trapping mechanisms, including Venus Flytraps, pitcher plants (Nepenthes) that use pitfall traps, and Sarracenia. Through live specimens and easy-to-understand panels, you can learn the amazing mechanisms of how these plants capture and digest their prey.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The biggest draw is the opportunity to observe the 'movement' and 'mechanisms' of carnivorous plants—things often only seen in textbooks—up close. The striking movement of the Venus Flytrap snapping shut and the unique structure of the liquid-filled pitchers will leave a lasting impression.

The exhibition categorizes trapping styles into four types, allowing visitors to deeply understand how these plants evolved.
