The Keiro-sai is a significant traditional ceremony held at Jishu Shrine to pray for the health and longevity of the elderly. Historically, this area was believed to be a sacred island or mountain of eternal life known as Horai-san, as the shrine grounds remained an elevated landmass even when the Kyoto basin was a lake. In addition to the deity of matchmaking, Jishu Shrine enshrines Ota-no-Okami, the protector of longevity, making this festival a profound moment for spiritual prayer.
The most distinctive part of this ceremony is the receipt of special ceremonial gifts. For those aged 70 and older, the shrine offers "Longevity Chopsticks" and "Good Fortune Mallets" (Kaiun Kozuchi) to symbolize a long and healthy life. In Japanese tradition, chopsticks are considered sacred tools, and here they serve as powerful symbols of well-being. Visitors can experience a moment of deep tranquility and spiritual enrichment while praying for the health of themselves or their loved families within the serene atmosphere of the shrine.
The Keiro-sai is held annually on the third Monday of September. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM (14:00). Please note that the specific program flow may change depending on the day's circumstances.
