Kawagoe Matsuri is a vibrant urban festival held in the heart of Kawagoe City, Saitama. This festival has evolved under the influence of the Edo period's 'Tenka-sai' and is characterized by the procession of exquisitely decorated floats carrying intricate puppets through the iconic Kurazukuri (warehouse-style) streets. With a history spanning over 370 years, the 'Kawagoe Hikawa Matsuri Float Procession' was inscribed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016. It is also designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, making it a highly significant event for experiencing authentic Japanese tradition.
The most breathtaking moment of the festival is the 'Hikkawase.' This occurs when several massive floats face each other at street intersections to compete in a high-energy spectacle. Accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of flutes, drums, and gongs, the passing of the floats creates an overwhelming sense of scale and excitement. The night-time 'Hikkawase' is particularly magical; as lanterns illuminate the floats, the atmosphere becomes incredibly dynamic and mystical. You can feel the heat of the crowd and the soul of the festival through the vibrant music and the sight of the ornate floats.
The festival takes place over two days on October 17 and October 18.

Kawagoe Matsuri is a massive event that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors.
