The Hobikibune Model Boat Workshop is an authentic workshop centered on the 'Kasumigaura Hobikibune,' a traditional cultural icon of Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Instructors are members of the 'Kasumigaura Hobikibune & Hobikibami Fishing Method Preservation Society,' who will pass on their specialized skills and knowledge. This is more than just a craft class; it is a profound cultural experience that connects you to the history and traditions of the region.
The greatest appeal of this workshop is the opportunity to receive direct instruction from preservation society members who inherit the actual techniques used for these traditional boats. The process of recreating the shape of a traditional vessel with your own hands provides a deep sense of accomplishment. The finished model is a beautiful piece reflecting the aesthetic beauty of Japanese traditional design. Through this hands-on experience, you can learn about the wisdom of ancient fishing methods and the water-based culture of Japan.
The event will be held on August 22, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This half-day program allows for focused, concentrated work, providing a rich and immersive time to learn traditional craftsmanship.
The workshop takes place at 'Machikado Kura Nomura' in Tsuchiura City. We recommend checking local maps and public transportation routes in advance. Please verify the exact location using a map application or official information before your visit.
This program is designed for students in the 5th grade (elementary school) and above. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participation is limited to the first 18 people on a first-come, first-served basis, so please register early to secure your spot. Since instructors are members of the preservation society, you will learn fine details of traditional techniques.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that is easy to move in and won't show stains, as the workshop involves manual labor. To participate, please follow the specified application method by providing your address, name, age, and phone number via fax or telephone. A fee of 2,500 JPY is required for materials; please prepare this in cash.
