Ito Onsen Hashi Matsuri is a traditional event held around the Ito Onsen area in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. This festival is rooted in the Japanese spirit of showing gratitude and respect for tools that have fulfilled their purpose. The ritual of lighting the "Hashi Kuyo-to" (Chopstick Memorial Tower)—a structure built from countless used chopsticks—is a rare and visually stunning spectacle.
The highlight is the moment the fire is lit on the Chopstick Memorial Tower. Seeing the light illuminate the massive pile of chopsticks is a truly mystical experience. It is a precious opportunity to connect with the history and culture of Ito Onsen amidst the serene atmosphere of a summer night. Often, this event coincides with local summer fireworks, adding to the magical atmosphere of the evening.

The Hashi Matsuri offers a chance to experience the Japanese culture of "Kuyo" (memorial/offering), teaching the importance of treating everyday objects with respect. As this is an outdoor nighttime event, please prepare accordingly. We recommend combining this visit with a stay at a local hot spring (onsen) resort to fully enjoy the summer in Ito.
