Event Overview

Experience the rich natural environment of Kami-Amakusa, Kumamoto, through our special "Fiddler Crab & Sea Firefly Observation Event." This event is divided into two parts to showcase different faces of nature. During the day, observe the ecology of the beautiful Fiddler Crab (a type of crab), and at night, witness the enchanting light of the Sea Firefly. Hosted by the local Amakusa Visitor Center, the event includes professional commentary from a Kumamoto University professor, providing a deep educational experience beyond simple observation.

The greatest charm of this event is the opportunity to observe the "brillance of life" up close—something rarely seen in daily life.

Observe the unique movements and ecology of crabs on the sandy beach. With expert explanations, you will gain deep knowledge about why they move the way they do and the environment they inhabit.

The stage is the night sea. The sight of Sea Fireflies glowing in a pale blue light amidst the darkness is a masterpiece of nature. The way the light dances along the shoreline is truly mystical and provides a deeply moving experience, leaving visitors with unforgettable memories of nature's mystery.

Venue & Access

The venue differs depending on the observation content:

• *Fiddler Crab Observation**: Nagura Tidal Flat (Fiddler Crab Monument Plaza)
• *Sea Firefly Observation**: Hiiai Beach

Both locations are along the coast of the Amakusa area. As public transportation is limited, we recommend checking your access route in advance.

Participation Tips

This is a perfect opportunity to learn about the wonders of nature. With expert lectures, it is highly recommended for everyone from children to adults interested in natural sciences. As this is an outdoor activity in a natural environment, please note the following:

For the Fiddler Crab observation, you will be active on a sandy beach, so clothes and shoes that can get wet are essential. For the Sea Firefly observation, activities take place at night and it will be dark; please bring a flashlight for safety. Please respect nature and follow etiquette to ensure no living creatures are harmed.
