Gyoten Zazen is a special annual Zazen session held at Imayama Hofukuji Temple in Okayama Prefecture. "Gyoten" refers to "dawn," and as the name suggests, this session is practiced in the profound silence before daybreak. Unlike regular sessions, this offers a rare opportunity to face your inner self amidst the crisp, clear air of early morning.
This event is cherished by those seeking to escape daily bustle and sharpen their spirit. It is a truly special moment to feel the essence of Zen within the solemn atmosphere of the historic Hofukuji Temple.
The greatest charm is the timing: the dawn. Starting at 5:00 AM, the Zazen is practiced while the surroundings are still dark and silent. You can experience the process of your mind settling down as the sky gradually brightens—a unique beauty exclusive to Gyoten Zazen.
The session consists of two 30-minute rounds, allowing you to build focus without being overwhelmed. Beyond the Zen practice itself, the historic temple architecture and the very atmosphere of the space provide deep relaxation and mindfulness, helping you find inner peace and relief from daily stress.
Gyoten Zazen is held over five days from August 1st to August 5th annually.
As this is an early morning event, please arrive with plenty of time to ensure you do not miss the reception. Experience the special schedule that begins with the break of dawn.
The event takes place at Imayama Hofukuji.

To fully enjoy the early morning silence, preparation is key. This event starts much earlier than the regular Zazen sessions (which typically start at 7:30 AM). Prepare yourself to focus your mind in the cool morning air.
Please note that the traditional "Baito Charei" (tea ceremony) and breakfast are not provided for this specific event. This allows for a simpler, more immersive experience focused purely on Zen.
