Located in Sakuragawa, Ibaraki Prefecture, "Futsumi Kannon Koyama-dera" has been a center of prayer since its founding in 735. This event features the Goma ritual, a Buddhist ceremony where fire is used to burn away worldly desires and fulfill wishes. Koyama-dera is a historic temple said to have been founded by the monk Gyoki by order of Emperor Shomu. The main hall, three-story pagoda, and Nio Gate are designated as national and prefectural cultural properties. During this ceremony, prayers for protection and safety are offered through the burning of Goma fire.
The most striking feature is the Goma ritual itself. Watching the sacred flames used to offer prayers provides a rare opportunity to observe traditional Japanese Buddhist rites firsthand. The main deity, the Eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva, is believed to watch over and save all people from every direction.
