The Fuyumode at Kawagoe Kumano Shrine is a special ritual to purify the mind and body at the end of the year. This historic shrine, founded in 1590 after being split from Kishu Kumano, is deeply revered for bringing good luck, matchmaking, and protection from misfortune. In the crisp winter air, you can participate in traditional ceremonies to wash away the year's impurities and prepare for the New Year.
The main highlights of Fuyumode are the 'Chinowa-kuguri' (passing through a sacred reed ring) and 'Ningyo Kiyome-harai' (purification of dolls). These traditional rituals are designed to cleanse invisible impurities, offering a deeply refreshing spiritual experience. Additionally, the limited-edition 'Special Goshuin' stamps are a major draw. These exquisitely designed stamps reflect the beauty of the season and serve as a wonderful memento of your visit. You can also enjoy a peaceful stroll through the shrine grounds, featuring a money-washing pond and stone paths.
The Fuyumode event takes place from December 5 to December 30. Please note that the period for applying for the special Goshuin sets via mail is from December 6 to December 20. We invite you to spend a meaningful moment marking the end of the year amidst the serene winter atmosphere.
The event is held at Kawagoe Kumano Shrine, located in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. The shrine grounds offer a beautiful, historic atmosphere that changes with the seasons. As there is no dedicated parking available at the shrine, we highly recommend using public transportation to reach the venue.
To fully enjoy Fuyumode, be sure to check the seasonal Goshuin stamps. Special sets featuring motifs like the Yatagarasu or Amabie may be available. Since prices and contents vary by set, we recommend checking the official website in advance. Also, please note that there may be specific times for receiving hand-written Goshuin, so it is best to arrive with plenty of time.
