The Yunishi-gawa Onsen Kamakura Festival is a signature winter event held in Yunishi-gawa Onsen, Nikko City, Tochigi. From late January to early March, countless snow 'kamakura' (snow huts) appear throughout the hot spring town. Formerly known as the 'Shining Ice Bonbori and Kamakura Festival,' this event is a beloved local tradition. The sight of mini kamakura glowing with warm light creates a magical, dreamlike atmosphere amidst the snowy landscape.
The main highlight is the breathtaking night illumination. The countless mini kamakura lined along the Sawaguchi Riverbank create a stunning effect, looking like floating particles of light in the snow—a perfect spot for photography and social media. In the 'Heike no Sato' area, you can enjoy a more serene atmosphere surrounded by historical buildings and soft snow lights. There are also spots to enjoy food inside the kamakura or engage in snow play, making it a relaxing experience for families and couples.
The festival typically runs from late January to early March. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the illumination at the Sawaguchi Riverbank venue begins around 17:30. At the Heike no Sato area, the mini kamakura are lit every day during the festival period. Please check official sources for the most up-to-date specific dates.

Regarding access, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the festival, a special one-way return bus service by Nikko Kotsu (between Kinugawa Onsen Station and Yunishi-gawa Onsen) may be available, allowing for easy day trips from the Tokyo area.
Since each area has a different vibe, we recommend visiting multiple spots. The illumination is most beautiful after sunset. While the Sawaguchi Riverbank area is well-maintained, please be careful as the ground can be slippery due to snow and ice.
As this is a very cold environment, we strongly recommend wearing heavy winter clothing and heat packs. Please wear non-slip shoes for walking on snowy paths. Since fees for entry or food may vary by area, please check the official website in advance.
