Event Overview

The Yosakoi Festival is one of Japan's most energetic and iconic dance festivals, held annually in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture. Since its inception in 1954, it has become one of the 'Three Great Festivals of Shikoku,' rivaling the famous Awa Odori in intensity and passion. The festival features a unique blend of traditional 'Seicho' melodies mixed with modern genres like rock, hip-hop, flamenco, and samba. As dancers move through the streets accompanied by 'Jikata-sha' (decorated trucks), approximately 20,000 performers from 200 teams create a breathtaking spectacle that draws crowds from all over the world.

The greatest charm of Yosakoi is the free-spirited fusion of music and dance. You can enjoy highly creative performances that maintain traditional Japanese dance elements while incorporating global musical styles. Through programs like the 'Citizen Charter Corps,' even visitors can join the dance, creating a wonderful sense of unity between the performers and the audience.

Schedule

The festival takes place over four days every year from August 9 to August 12. The schedule is as follows:

• *August 9**: Eve Festival (Includes the Kochi City Summer Fireworks Display with approximately 4,000 fireworks)
• *August 10 & August 11**: Main Festival (Approximately 200 teams perform at various competition and performance areas throughout the city)
• *August 12**: National Competition & Closing Ceremony (A large-scale stage featuring teams from outside Kochi Prefecture)

Venue & Access

The festival is held at multiple locations throughout Kochi City. The main areas are:

• *Kyosen-jo (Competition Areas)**: The primary performance spots where teams compete (9 locations in the city)
• *Enbu-jo (Performance Areas)**: Designated performance areas scattered throughout the streets (8 locations in the city)

Venues are centered around the heart of Kochi City, allowing you to enjoy a variety of performances as you explore the city. Since crowds are expected to be heavy, using public transportation is highly recommended.

Participation Tips

If you want to do more than just watch, look for information on the 'Citizen Charter Corps.' Around 14:00 on August 10 and 11, you can visit the gym at Otemae High School to join the dance for free. Naruko clappers are often available for free loan, making it easy to jump in without preparation. Some teams may also offer original Happi coats or Naruko for purchase.

What to Bring & Etiquette

Comfortable clothing is recommended for spectating. As this is an outdoor summer event, please prepare for the heat by bringing water and a hat to prevent heatstroke.
