The Yonezawa Uesugi Festival is a significant traditional event held in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, to herald the arrival of spring. Historically celebrated as the festival of the Uesugi Shrine, it is a beloved local tradition that honors the legacy of the Uesugi clan. While the festival has deep historical roots, the modern iteration has been a staple of the region since around 1947. Held during the Golden Week holiday period, the festival is famous for its grand-scale productions that bring the history of the legendary warlord Uesugi Kenshin to life.

The most spectacular moments occur on May 3rd, featuring the "Uesugi Clan Parade" and the subsequent "Kawanakajima Battle" reenactment. The battle sequence, involving approximately 700 participants, takes place along the banks of the Matsukawa River, allowing spectators to feel the intense energy of the Sengoku period.
During the Uesugi Clan Parade, participants dressed in authentic traditional warrior attire march through the streets. Interestingly, while the role of Uesugi Kenshin was traditionally held by men, recent years have seen women take on this prestigious role, adding a modern touch to the ancient tradition.
