Event Overview

The Yatsushiro Myoken Festival is the annual autumn ritual of Yatsushiro Shrine in Kumamoto Prefecture, recognized as one of the three greatest festivals in Kyushu. This event is not only designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan but is also inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, reflecting its immense global cultural value. With a history documented as far back as 1515, the festival preserves traditional forms and rituals that have been meticulously maintained since the Edo period.

Highlights & What to Expect

The absolute highlight is the "Shinko Gyoretsu" (Divine Procession), a magnificent parade featuring portable shrines (mikoshi), priests, and even ceremonial guns and sacred horses. You will see the unique "Kasaboko"—elaborate, ornate floats exclusive to Yatsushiro—alongside lions influenced by Nagasaki traditions and the rare "Kameja" (Turtle-Snake) inspired by Myoken legends. Watching these grand processions move through the historic streets and traditional architecture, maintaining a look unchanged since the late Edo period, is a truly breathtaking experience.

Schedule

The ritual is held over two days. The main schedule is as follows:

• *November 22**: The "Oshidari" (Descent) takes place. The divine shrines depart for the Shioya Hachiman Shrine, where they stay overnight.
• *November 23**: The "Oagari" (Ascent) takes place. This is the climax of the festival, as the shrines and the grand procession return from Shioya Hachiman Shrine to Yatsushiro Shrine.
