Event Overview

The Yamaga Toro Festival is a historic celebration centered around Omiya Shrine in Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture. The festival's origins are rooted in legend: when Emperor Keiko traveled through Kyushu, local villagers guided his procession through the mist using torches. It is also deeply connected to the history of praying for hot spring-water emergence during the Muromachi period.

Today, the festival is famous for the sight of dancers wearing 'Kanatoro' (Golden Lanterns) made of beautiful gold and silver washi paper. As they dance gracefully to the rhythm of the 'Yohebo' folk song, they create a spectacle that captivates visitors from around the world. It is a profound expression of local culture and artistic heritage.

The absolute climax of the festival is the 'Thousand-Person Lantern Dance' held on the night of August 16. The sight of women in traditional yukata carrying golden lanterns above their heads, dancing in unison to a slow, rhythmic beat, creates a stunning, ethereal vortex of light in the darkness. This interplay of light and shadow is a true work of art.

On August 15, you can enjoy the 'Dedication Lantern Dance' at the Omiya Shrine grounds, followed by a spectacular fireworks display over the Kikuchi River. On the night of August 16, the energy reaches its peak with a ritual to welcome Emperor Keiko, accompanied by a dramatic torch procession (Tomoshibi).
