Event Overview

Yamage Matsuri is a historic tradition held as part of the Yakumo Shrine festival in Nasukarasuyama, Tochigi. The highlight is the construction of a massive temporary stage (Yama), reaching 10m in height and 100m in depth, where Kabuki (Shosa Kyogen) and Kagura are performed. These beautiful structures, decorated with traditional Japanese paper, move through the streets. This event is a designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and is linked to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Highlights

The main attraction is the dynamic Kabuki performances on the 'Yama' stages appearing throughout the town. Local performers present traditional plays with mystical effects like smoke and sound. A standout moment is the appearance of the character 'Gama' breathing smoke. Another highlight is 'Bunnuki,' where floats meet in the streets amidst intense energy. You can also experience the 'Abare Mikoshi' (wild portable shrine) and the sight of illuminated floats parading through the night streets.

Schedule

The festivities typically take place over three days during the 4th week of July.

• *Friday**: Shinko-sai (Departure) featuring Shinto rituals and Kabuki performances.
• *Saturday**: Togyo-sai featuring float processions and movements through the town.
• *Sunday**: Kanko-sai (Return) where the festival reaches its climax with the intense Mikoshi rituals near the Torii gate.

Venue & Access

The event centers around the old Nasukarasuyama town area, including Yakumo Shrine and six local districts. Due to heavy crowds and traffic restrictions, especially around Seseragi-dori, we highly recommend using public transportation or walking.

This is a 'dynamic festival' where the stage is built, dismantled, and moved rapidly. The energy of the youth pulling the floats is truly captivating. Some areas may offer paid seating. Arrive early to secure a good spot for the traditional performances and the intense 'Bunnuki' excitement.
