Event Overview

The Yagoro-don Festival is a traditional Shinto ritual held in Soo City, Kagoshima, boasting a rich history of approximately 900 years. The festival honors the legendary giant known as 'Yagoro-don' (Adult Yagoro), a figure from South Kyushu folklore described as being so massive he could sit in the mountains and wash his face in the sea. The origins of this ritual are tied to the 'Hojoe' memorial service related to the Hayato uprisings during the Nara period.

In local folklore, the Yagoro-don legends of Miyazaki and Kagoshima are actually three brothers. The figure appearing at Iwakawa Hachiman Shrine in Soo City is the 'second son.' This festival is a significant cultural treasure, and the Yagoro-don float procession is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The absolute highlight is the sight of the massive 4.85-meter-tall Yagoro-don. The giant figure, constructed from bamboo baskets, parades through the streets with immense presence, dressed in traditional plum-patterned clothing and carrying a large sword and spear.

Don't miss the famous 'Yagoro-don Inabaura.' The dynamic movement of the giant as it passes under the Iwakawa Viaduct is a breathtaking spectacle that thrills spectators. The festival's unique atmosphere begins in the early hours, starting with the 'Yagoro-don is waking up!' drum calls at 1:00 AM and the 'Waking the Giant' ritual at 4:00 AM, which are essential to the spiritual experience.

The festival is held annually on November 3rd (Culture Day).

Access is most convenient via the 'Soo Yagoro Interchange' on the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway. Expect large crowds around the city center on the day of the event.

Tips for Visitors

The giant figure travels a route of about 5 kilometers. Watching the massive structure skillfully navigate under power lines and bridges is a thrilling experience. The area near the viaduct, where the 'Inabaura' occurs, is a prime viewing spot but gets very crowded. Arrive early to secure a good vantage point.
