The Wakasa Shrine Grand Festival (commonly known as Wakasa Matsuri) is a historic ritual held at Wakasa Shrine in Wakasa Town, Yazu District, Tottori Prefecture. The shrine's origins are tied to the Yabe clan, the first lords of Kikajo Castle, and it enjoyed the patronage of the Ikeda clan, the lords of the Tottori Domain, during the Edo period. The shrine grounds are surrounded by the 'Wakasa Shrine Forest,' a designated natural monument of Tottori Prefecture, featuring a lush, ancient forest of oak and fir trees that creates a sacred and majestic atmosphere.
This festival is a vital event for passing local traditions to the next generation, featuring vibrant processions of portable shrines (mikoshi), parades, and traditional lion dances. The most intense moment is the sight of the shrines racing up the stone steps, a spectacle that leaves spectators in awe.
The absolute highlight is the 'Gokosai' procession. This special event is held every other year. Under the flickering light of traditional torches, three portable shrines race up approximately 200 steep stone steps amidst powerful rhythmic chants. This dynamic display of strength and light is truly unforgettable.
Around the main event, the entire community is filled with a festive spirit, featuring traditional processions, lion dances, umbrella-decorated floats (kasaboko), and children's dances. The atmosphere during the evening festivities is particularly magical due to the illumination from the torches.
Since the festival involves walking on stone steps and viewing events outdoors at night, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. As temperatures can drop during evening events, please bring a light jacket or warm clothing for comfort.
