The Uwajima Ushio-oni Festival is a traditional summer celebration held around Warei Shrine in Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture. Its origins date back to 1702 during the reign of the 3rd Lord of the Uwajima Domain, Date Munehiro, when three sacred shrines were dedicated to Warei Shrine. Also known as the Warei Grand Festival, this event is deeply rooted in local history. The festival is characterized by high-energy-events passed down through generations, including the 'Kaiso Togyo' (sea procession) where shrines traverse the ocean, the powerful 'Hashirikomi' (running-in) by adults, and the charming 'Chigo Gyoretsu' (children's procession).
The main attraction is the presence of the 'Ushio-oni' (Ox-Demon) and the dynamic movement of the portable shrines. The sea procession, where shrines are carried across the water on boats, offers a mystical and powerful spectacle. The high-energy 'Hashirikomi' run by local men and the elegant procession of children in traditional attire are unique to this region. As night falls, large-scale fireworks displays launched from Uwajima Bay and Maruyama bring the excitement to a climax. The entire city vibrates with the sounds of music, traditional dances, and brass band performances, creating an unforgettable atmosphere of unity.
