The Usa Hachimangu Koshin-wari is a significant ritual performed at Usa Hachimangu Shrine in Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, as part of the autumn festivities. Its origins date back to the Sengoku (Warring States) period, when the powerful warlord Ouchi Yoshioki offered a dance to pray for victory in battle. This ritual serves as a precious cultural heritage that preserves the history and spirit of the region.
The most captivating part of this festival is the energetic dance performed by local children. Twelve dancers wear elaborate costumes featuring striking colors and unique headpieces such as 'Hanakasa' (flower hats) or 'Torikanmuri' (bird-shaped crowns). The sight of the vibrant fabrics swirling during the dance is breathtaking. The festival is held on a Sunday close to the 16th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. The program runs from approximately 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. To ensure you don't miss the main highlight, the 'Koshin-wari Odori' dance, please arrive in time for the start around 11:00 AM.
The event takes place at Usa Hachimangu Shrine (Address: 840 Oaza Suzuya, Hofu, Yamaguchi). Access by car is convenient, taking about 10 minutes from the Hofu-Nishi IC on the Sanyo Expressway. If you are using public transportation, we recommend checking local bus routes and train connections in advance to ensure a smooth journey.
To see the main event, the Koshin-wari dance, aim to be at the venue by 11:00 AM. This is the most efficient way to enjoy the highlight of the festival. As this is a sacred Shinto ritual, please observe the ceremony with respect for the local traditions and the solemn atmosphere.
