The Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition is one of Japan's most prestigious competitive fireworks displays, held in Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Unlike standard festivals, this is a high-level competition where top pyrotechnicians from across the country showcase their technical mastery to judges and spectators. Because artisans pour their absolute skill into every single shot, you can expect an incredibly dense and artistic-filled display of light and color.
The main draw is the competitive nature of the fireworks. The event features specific categories such as the 'Star Mine Section,' '10-Go Tama Section,' and 'Creative Fireworks Section,' each showcasing different technical skills and aesthetic beauty. Additionally, the program includes 'Lecture Fireworks' and special performances by the firework masters themselves, such as the wide star mine 'Tsuchiura Hanabi-zukushi,' ensuring an engaging experience. Pay close attention to the precision and soul embedded in every single explosion.
The event is scheduled for November 7, 2026. The competition begins at 5:30 PM and is expected to conclude by 8:00 PM. In the event of bad weather, the competition will be postponed to the following week, November 14, 2026.
The venue is the banks of the Sakura River (near Gakuen Ohashi Bridge). The area becomes extremely crowded on the day of the event, so we highly recommend using public transportation and checking your route in advance. Please note that the flight of helicopters and drones (small unmanned aircraft) is strictly prohibited in the vicinity of the venue.
Since this is a professional competition, the displays are characterized by rapid-fire, high-precision star mines. Some special effects are best viewed from specific angles, so it is helpful to check your position relative to the Sakura River. You can also enjoy the lively atmosphere created by the many food trucks and stalls around the venue.
As the event takes place in November, please be aware of the significant drop in temperature at night. Temperatures can fall sharply once the sun goes down, so please prepare warm clothing such as heavy jackets or coats. Additionally, please follow all safety rules and be mindful of the crowds.
