The Tsuruga Lantern Floating and Grand Fireworks Display is a historic annual event held on August 16th at the Municipal Matsubara Beach in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture. Originally established in 1950 to honor fallen souls, this festival—also known as the Tsuruga Fireworks Display—has evolved into a beloved summer tradition that draws many visitors from across the prefecture and beyond.
This event is defined by the striking contrast between profound serenity and explosive energy. The evening begins with the 'Toro Nagashi' (Lantern Floating), where lanterns are released onto the sea accompanied by Buddhist prayers to honor ancestors and the deceased. This creates a deeply moving and ethereal atmosphere of light upon the water.
Following this tranquil moment, the atmosphere shifts with the start of the Grand Fireworks Display. Approximately 10,000 fireworks will illuminate the sky, featuring massive 20-go shells (Nishakutama), water-surface fireworks, and unique 'character' or 'message' fireworks. Modern elements like laser displays and advanced sound systems also enhance the experience, providing a multi-sensory spectacle of sight and sound.

The venue is the Municipal Matsubara Beach in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture.
Traffic will be extremely heavy. Please note that cars, motorcycles, and bicycles are strictly prohibited from entering the immediate vicinity of the venue due to narrow access roads. You must use designated temporary parking lots nearby. Free shuttle buses will also be operating to transport visitors to the venue.
Fireworks are launched from seven different locations, allowing for a wide-range view. The beach area becomes very crowded, so we recommend arriving early to secure a spot with a picnic sheet. For a different perspective, you can also view the display from elevated areas such as Kanagasaki Ryokuchi or Mt. Tsutsutsumiyama.
